Roles & Responsibilities of Candidates, Assessor & Internal verifier
Roles and Responsibilities of a Competence Assessor
1. Understanding and Applying the Standards
Assessor must have a thorough understanding of assessment standards, organisational criteria, and accreditation requirements. These standards must be applied accurately and consistently in every assessment.
2. Assessment Planning
The assessor is responsible for planning the assessment process, including when, where, and how the assessments will be conducted. Planning also involves clarifying the roles and responsibilities of both the assessor and the candidate. A well-planned assessment helps build the candidate's confidence and ensures the process is smooth and transparent.
3. Communication
Assessor must establish and maintain effective communication with the candidate, candidate's supervisor, internal verifier, and relevant stakeholders. Communication includes motivating the candidate and providing feedback at various stages of the assessment.
4. Carrying Out Assessments
Assessor must conduct Knowledge, Skills, and Behavioural assessments in line with approved assessment standards. Assessments should be carried out without disrupting normal work processes, and all relevant evidence must be collected accurately.
5. Making Assessment Decisions
After evaluating all collected evidence, the assessor must make a clear decision: Competent (C) or Not Yet Competent (NYC). Assessment decisions must always be fair, honest, transparent, and free from external influence.
6. Recording the Assessment Process
The assessor must document the full assessment process and properly store all related evidence for future verification or audit purposes.
7. Providing Feedback to Candidates
Constructive feedback must be provided during the assessment and at its conclusion. Feedback must be constructive, should guide the candidate on strengths, improvement areas, and next steps where applicable.
8. Participating in Standardisation Processes
Assessors must actively participate in all standardisation meetings and discussions.
9. Taking Part in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Assessors have the responsibility to continuously improve their own competencies. CPD includes staying updated with new technologies, procedures, systems, and changes relevant to their job role or area of expertise.
Roles & Responsibilities of an Internal Verifier
The primary role of an Internal Verifier is to manage and assure the quality of the competence assessment process. Their responsibilities include ensuring fairness, consistency, and compliance with organisational and accreditation standards. The key responsibilities are as follows:
1. Ensuring Candidate Comfort and Well-Being
The Internal Verifier must ensure that the candidate was at ease throughout the assessment process. A supportive environment helps maintain fairness and reduces assessment-related stress.
2. Maintaining the Quality of Assessments
Internal Verifiers ensure that all assessments meet required quality standards. They check for consistency, fairness, accuracy, and adherence to organisational expectations.
3. Involvement in the Assessment Planning Process
They review and support assessment planning to ensure it is aligned with standards and appropriate for the candidate and the job role.
4. Verifying Compliance with Standards and Procedures
Internal Verifiers confirm that every assessment was conducted strictly according to:
- • assessment standards
- • organisational procedures
- • guidelines and accreditation requirements
5. Guiding Assessors and Candidates
They provide guidance to assessors whenever needed and support candidates to ensure they clearly understand the process and expectations.
6. Supporting Assessment Decision-Making
Internal Verifiers review the evidence and assessment records to confirm that assessor decisions (Competent / Not Yet Competent) are valid, consistent, and evidence-based.
7. Coaching and Mentoring Assessors
They coach, mentor, and develop assessors to enhance their skills, strengthen assessment quality, and maintain consistency across the organisation.
